Update products in subscriptions before a future-dated update

You can update a product through an order action even if there is already a future-dated update on the subscription. In other words, you can update a product to make it effective earlier than the effective date of an existing update (that is, the future-dated update).

For example:

  • A customer subscribes to your Basic Service with a price of 100 USD for one year starting on January 1, 2022.
  • In March, the customer wants to upgrade to your Premium Service with a price of 120 USD starting on a future date, July 1, 2022. So you create a future-dated Update Product order action by setting the effective date to July 1, 2022, and setting the price to 120 USD.
  • On July 25, the customer wants to degrade to your Special Service from June 1, 2022, to June 30, 2022, with a price of 50 USD. For example, the customer or you found the charge during this period should be corrected to the price of 50 USD. So you create an Update Product order action by setting a specific update date to June 1, 2022, and setting the price to 50 USD.

The following table lists the services your customer has subscribed to:

Service Name Effective Date and End Date

Basic Service

January 1, 2022 - May 31, 2022

Special Service

June 1, 2022 - June 30, 2022

Premium Service

July 1, 2022 - December 31, 2022

You can use the Zuora UI to update a product even when the future-dated Update Product order action already exists on the subscription.

To create an Update Product order action on a subscription with a future-dated Update Product order action:

  1. Follow steps 1-7 in Update a Product in a Subscription.
  2. Switch the Make this update before a future date change toggle to the right.

When the SPECIFIC UPDATE DATE field and the calendar icon icon-open-calendar.png appear, click the calendar icon and specify a date before the starting date of the future-dated Update Product .

  3. Finish steps 9-11 in Update a Product in a Subscription.
