If your subscription business does not currently have a high volume of amendments to make (for example, if your business is just launching a service to new subscribers), you might decide to start with manual amendments, since they are fast to complete. These are amendments that one of your employees would process directly within the Zuora user interface.

This topic describes the specifics of how to use a manual amendment to update a product within a subscription. Updating a product in a subscription is useful, for example, if a customer wants to add more seats to a subscription or if you want to change the pricing for a customer.

At the end of this topic, we also provide pointers to all amendments that can be performed within Zuora.

Exercise

In this exercise, we will describe how to update the subscription you created back in Milestone 1, Part 4, but you should be able to map how these steps would work for any of your subscriptions.

To update a product:

  1. Log in to Zuora with your user name and password.
  2. In the left navigation pane, click Subscriptions.
  3. In the main section of the page, find and click on the view link for the subscription that you created in Milestone 1, Part 4.
  4. On the Subscription detail page, click the green amendment button, located in the upper-right corner of the page:

  5. Enter an Amendment Name and select Update a Product as the Amendment Type:

  6. Click save.
  7. Select the product to update from the drop-down at the bottom of the page:

  8. After selecting the product, a new section will appear on the page with a column for Original and a column for New. In the New column, click on the link for the charge that you want to update:

  9. Now, update the Price or Quantity for that charge (be sure to click save after updating a charge).  For example, if you want to drop the monthly price for a subcriber, you would update the Price with the new value.  Or, if you want to add more seats for this subscriber, you would update the Quantity with the new value.
  10. When you have made your changes, scroll to the top of the page and click the Contract effective button.  In the dialog that appears, enter the date (today or a date in the future) when you want this amendment to take place, then click save.
  11. If the Service Activation trigger condition is enabled in your Zuora tenant, repeat the previous step with the Service activation button that will now appear on the top of the page.
  12. If the Customer Acceptance trigger condition is enabled in your Zuora tenant, repeat the previous step with the Customer acceptance button that will now appear on the top of the page.

When finished, you should now see a page displaying the details of your amendment with a Status of Completed:

What's NextEdit section

Now that you are familiar with the mechanics of using the Zuora UI to perform an amendment to a customer's subscription, you should explore the other amendments in Zuora on your own. Use the following links (open them in another browser window or be sure to come back to this page when finished) to learn how to:

  • Add a Product: Used to add another product to a customer subscription
  • Upgrade or Downgrade a Product: Used to replace a customer's rate plan with a higher-end plan that you offer (upgrade), or with a lower-end plan (downgrade)
  • Remove a Product: Used to remove a product from a customer subscription
  • Renew a Subscription: Used to renew a termed subscription
  • Update Terms and Conditions: Used primarily to change the terms (for example, the duration of the current term or the duration of the renewal term) of a subscription, and can also be used to change a subscription from termed to evergree, or vice-versa.

When finished, proceed to Part 3: Amend a Subscription Using Zuora API.
